Oceanside Passing Track Extension
Oceanside, California

With San Diego area roads and freeways becoming more congested, the transportation alternative provided by intercity passenger rail becomes more attractive. Amtrak’s Pacific Surfliner service, as well as Coaster commuter train service and freight service on the line from Oceanside to San Diego, benefited from the operational advantages provided by the extension of the Oceanside passing track. As part of North County Transit District’s 20-year plan, this line will eventually be completely double-tracked. This short-term project contributed to that future goal.

As prime consultant, J.L. Patterson & Associates provided civil, track, and structural engineering services. The work included double-tracking the line from Mile Post 227.2 to Mile Post 228.4; constructing a new 245-foot-long prestressed concrete bridge; replacing an existing 245-foot-long timber trestle bridge with a prestressed concrete bridge; adding a 500-foot-long MSE retaining wall; and installing a No. 24 high-speed turnout.
